The Bar Code may be “Crossing the Bar”

Researchers have made some great progress in toward eliminating the bar code from our grocery isles.  Although it is not yet financially feasible, it soon may be that instead of scanning each individual item.  all you will need to do is walk your cart or basket through a scanner, and every item will be processed.  I am pretty sure they will still have to hand weigh produce.  It may be in the future that you will really spend more time shopping at the grocery store than waiting in line especially on the day before thanksgiving.

  1. That would be sweet if you could just push your cart through and it would read implanted RFID chips. It would make things so much faster. Biggest problem I would see is the waste and recycling of the chips.

The goal is that they wouldn’t be chips at all, but actually printed directly on to the package using nano wire ink. Thus they would be recycled with the box.
